Non-Installation of Meters in Yellow Cabs:

CM Punjab Orders Inquiry

The Chief Minister Punjab Mian Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif on the application of a Taxi meter dealer from Karachi Mr. Anwar Khan has ordered an inquiry and directed the concerned officials of Punjab Transport Authority to look into the matter as to why the Taxi meters are not being installed in the recently announced Punjab Yellow cab Taxi scheme.

It may be remembered that the delivery of Yellow cab under Punjab Rozgar scheme will start from first week of September 2011 and the Punjab Government has not ordered the installation of Taxi Meters in this scheme which is a violation of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance section 35, 53, 59 and Motor vehicle rules section 124.

Interestingly, a writ petition in Lahore High court has also been filed on 1st of August 2011 against Govt. of Punjab and Provincial Transport and other respondents challenging the non-installation of the Taxi Meters. It has been contended that Non-installation of Taxi Meter is against the law and by law it was mandatory to get every Taxi cab fitted with the approved brand of Taxi Meters.

The Lahore High Court on 4th of August has issued notices to the respondents directing them to file Para-wise comments to the issues raised in the Writ Petition. The respondents have been asked to file their replies before the first week of September without fail.
