‘Can’t afford more Saleem Shahzads’:

PFUJ warns of protests if missing journalist not recovered;

Channel-5 reporter, Munawar, missing since Thursday noon

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has expressed great concern over the missing of a senior journalist, Malik Munawar Hussain from Karachi.

According to details, Malik Munawar Hussain, a crime reporter with Channel 5, left his office at 3:20 pm to have lunch at Mehmoodabad on July 21. Since then he remains untraceable, and his mobile phone is also switched off. According to his family, he had been receiving threats from unknown persons.

PFUJ President, Pervaiz Shaukat has said the targeting of journalists is continuing in one form or the other and the authorities concerned seem to have failed to protect media persons. He said the law enforcement agencies should take immediate steps to recover Mr. Munawar Hussain and arrest the culprits.

”The PFUJ reserves the right to resort to protests if the missing journalist is not recovered,” he added.

PFUJ Secretary General, Amin Yousuf has also demanded of the Sindh Governor, Ishratul-Ibad and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to take serious notice of the missing of Malik Munawar Hussain and order his immediate recovery.

He said journalists are facing hostilities from various elements which are a matter of grave concern. He further said that the protection of the lives of media persons was the duty of the state and every measure should be taken to ensure their safety.
